Benediction ~ Befriend the Lonely
Some needs are easier to meet than we consider.
Greetings Dear Reader,
We all know someone who is lonely. I have fought with this my entire life. I have never really fit in or been considered normal. The darkness I carried in me since I was a boy was more visible than I realized. People would sense it and be warned away. As I struggled to compensate for it in unhealthy ways, I became more of a square peg and found few holes into which I could fit.
Loneliness is a strong and powerful thing. I will not spend our time today wrestling with the internal struggle it presents. Instead, I wish to focus on the phrase from Benediction “befriend the lonely.” On the journey home, we are supposed to care for each other. We are obligated to befriend the lonely.
Again, we all know someone who is lonely but I feel we do not do enough to befriend them. We may even say hello and talk about getting together for this or that. We do not, however, work to eradicate loneliness in the lives of others. We are too busy doing the things important to us. We are settled into our routines and traditions, forgetting how they become barriers to making space for others.
When we plan things, we should include those who we see alone and in need. The work of our hands must befriend the lonely. It must see them and find ways to love them out of their loneliness. If we are blessed with fellow travelers, we must see to it others share in the blessing.
Coming along those without a companion or group of friends will allow us to discover how their soul is unique to the Father. If I show love to the Father by loving the lonely; by befriending them, I get the chance to discover beauty others miss. Whatever we do for the least of these, Dear Reader, we do for Christ. This stands alone in eradicating loneliness. The work of our hands is meant for this beautiful loving task.
