Chameleon ~ Blend In

If I fail to love at every turn, no one knows where I come from.

Greetings Dear Reader,

I suppose that I should first address the most obvious idea. Chameleons blend in. They are given the ability to camouflage and match their surroundings. For the reptile that is a good thing.

I have always been fascinated by creatures that blend with the world around them. The Walking Stick looks like a twig. A Katydid seems to be a leaf. They are designed to resemble parts of a tree. The Chameleon, however, changes to fit its surroundings.

Whilst this is good for the Chameleon, it is not the same for Christ-followers. We are required to be set apart and not blend into the world around us. It does not mean that we cannot fit in to some degree. It does mean that when it comes to our faith and following, we must stand out. I believe that it is how we stand out that matters.

Jesus tells us that we are to be recognizable; we are to stand out because of our love for each other. In a society that seeks to serve itself and an agenda of things that are not the Father’s, we are to be set apart. It is not our judgment or condemnation that is supposed to mark us. It is our love. It is the ability to stand for what is the Father’s and still showing love, kindness, and gentleness.

If Jesus tells us that the two great commandments are love and that all else is built on that, it is love then that must make us stand out. People must know whose we are and where we stand. They must know because of our love for them. They must see it in our actions and attitudes. Our failure to love others is why we cannot be seen.

Our refusal to be set apart by our love is what turns us into Chameleons. It is what causes us to blend into a world dying for the difference we can make. If I fail to love at every turn, no one knows where I come from. Instead, we choose to blend with our surroundings. I must stand out by choosing the narrow path of love for others. I must not deny Jesus, Dear Reader, by trying to be a Chameleon to those who do not know him.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
