Losing My Religion ~ Closing Thoughts

I must lose everything not focused on following Christ.

Greetings Dear Reader,

I suppose I could think through examples of this for days. I do, however, need to push on to other thoughts. As I sum this up for our mutual edification, I wish to be sure I am clear about the difference between religion and faith.

I have faith in Christ and desire to follow him in all I do. I am weary of all the things religion tries to add to the simple idea of loving the Father, loving other humans, and following Christ in faith to do both. I fail at the simplicity of this but strive to be better every day.

It does not mean all formal religion is bad. It does mean I must carefully examine how I participate. I will not reject, condemn, or hate those who disagree. I will love and be kind but I will not adopt their practices simply because they use the name of Jesus. We must follow Christ, Dear Reader. I must lose all religion that fails in this.

Losing My Religion — R.E.M.

Oh life is bigger
It’s bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I’ve said too much
I set it up

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper, of every waking hour
I’m choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost, and blinded fool, fool
Oh no I’ve said too much
I set it up

Consider this
Consider this the hint of the century
Consider this the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I’ve said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
Try, cry, fly, try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream

Wishing you joy in the journey,
