Tell Me What You See ~ Light

“You are the Light of the World oh Lord,
And you make your servants shine,
So, how can there be any darkness is me
If you are the Light of the World?” — Michael Card

Greetings Dear Reader,

As we saw yesterday, when John is beginning his gospel, he makes it clear that equates Jesus with God relative to creation and eternity. He also equates Jesus with light. “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” That John connects life and light becomes important when we look at what Jesus says about himself and us later.

Let us begin with what Jesus says about himself concerning life and light. John 8:12 “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” Notice the bridge between life and light here. He claims to be the Light of the World and John has told us already that the life in Jesus is the Light.

One of the reasons that people have difficulty seeing the light is that darkness does not understand light. Darkness can only be banished by light. If we go all the way back to creation as John does, we see that light is an integral part of all that there is. The first recorded words that we have of God speaking are,” Let there be light.”

There is something vital about light relative to our understanding of who Jesus is. From the division of darkness to the light that he is for defeating the darkness, to the light in us that is life we cannot ignore the relationship to light and begin to know Jesus. When we follow Christ, we follow light and life. It is one of the ways in which we become like Christ.

Jesus says to us that we are the light of the world in our reflection of who Jesus is. We become the beacons of light that draw others to follow Jesus when we live out the love, grace, and mercy he commands. Jesus tells us, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

When I follow Christ, part of my purpose is to be tight to others so that they can find their way out of the darkness. This is not judgment or pride. This is me recalling that I am to be reflective of the light of Jesus so that others may see him. My good is meant to reflect light on the Father so that he is understood and embraced. It is vital that I continuously grow closer to the Light of the World so that I become more difficult to see and Jesus is seen more clearly. Our first venture into understanding who Jesus is, Dear Reader, is to see clearly in the light. It is to abandon darkness so that “the glorious light of the Gospel can shine on us” and we can believe.

That light, simply put is that by faith in Christ payment for our redemption we enter into the path of following the Light. We enter into the process of our own darkness being diminished as we learn how to love others and love the Father. The journey is not easy but is really that simple. If you have thoughts or questions about that, feel free to ask them. If Jesus claims to be the Light of the World, Dear Reader, tell me what you see.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
