Hitting a baseball with a bat is the hardest feat in sports.

Greetings Dear Reader,

Song-walk with me. This series is a walk through the song The Lion’s Share by Dan Fogelberg. If you have not heard the song, you may wish to listen to it first. Also, if you are arriving in the middle, you might want to start from the beginning of the series. You can do that by clicking here. Today we will look at these lyrics:

Grand slam, your moments at hand
The day holds a costly bargain
Lost lamb asking the lion’s share

For those who do not know, a grand slam is an event in baseball. It is the moment when all three bases have runners or the bases are loaded. The batter hits a home run clearing the basses and scoring four runs. I have pitched three of these in my short baseball career. Hitting one is great. Having one hit off of your pitch is painful and the pain never goes away.

As the context of the song unfolds, we find the term “Grand Slam” may be a nickname for the subject of the first half of the song. He or she is the moment where the drama and potential are all staged. I have a chapter in Sheetrock on the Road called “The Mound.” The story discusses the binary potential of life. It all comes down to decisions and moments.

Our subject then has arrived at a moment. Not only is the moment at hand but “the day holds a costly bargain.” Grand Slam is also a lost lamb, Whatever his back story is, in this moment when things hang on his decision and action, he is lost. The moment is this: he is asking the Lion’s share.

To those familiar with the teachings of Jesus, this is an obvious reference to his lessons about us all being sheep and needing to hear his voice. One of his many titles is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. We are all referred to by this Lion as the lost sheep. So, Grand Slam is on the edge of the moment where he is asking to share in that which is the Lion’s.

Ponder what it must take for a Lamb to approach a Lion. Consider the wager on the table. The Lamb puts everything at risk, knowing the Lion could devour him in an instant. It takes humility and courage to enter into the costly bargain of approaching Christ for redemption. This, however, is the only way it works.

The need is to follow Christ with both a humble heart and a bold spirit. He wishes to have us all partake of the Lion’s share in all he has to offer. The moment of faith and following is constantly at hand. It is my obligation to share each moment with Christ by finding and following him in it.

The moment is always at hand, Dear Reader. Will I embrace my faith no matter the circumstance? It is a costly bargain but the Lion assures me of his love. He guarantees the outcome if I will only ask to follow him in loving the Father, loving others, and yielding to the Spirit. The day holds a costly bargain because we wager everything, but it is a bet worth taking. What do you think?

Wishing you joy in the journey,
