Happy Christmas Dear Reader,

Even during times that are a Hard Candy Christmas there is not room for hard feelings. The core of Christmas is reclamation, redemption, and reconciliation. When seeking Christmas, we are seeking these things.

We may hide the search in phrases like peace on earth and joy to the world but none of that is possible without true reconciliation. We muddle through things with fractured relationships wondering why we are not satisfied and at peace. As long as we carry ill feelings toward anyone, we cannot find peace and joy. We may mask it for a bit with food, drink, and things but there is no real peace.

It may be difficult but we should try to mend those broken relationships. The other person may be unwilling. They may even be actively hating us. There is risk in the offering but that does not mean that for the sake of Christ we do not take the risk. Once we do, if they are still reticent, then we can be at peace knowing that we tried. That only works, however, if we are resolute in our love and forgiveness.,

Like Scrooge’s nephew Fred, we need to be determined to offer peace. When recounting Scrooge’s response to his dinner invitation he vows, “I intend to give him the same chance every year whether he like it or not.” His love of Christmas will not allow him to return evil for evil. We all must return good for evil.

Where are you Christmas? You are in the card sent to someone who is unkind. You are in the gift given that you know will be unappreciated when you give it out of love. You are in a heart free of hard feelings and bitter resentments. You find your hands and feet in service to the ungrateful. You find your momentum to carry us through the year in holding no resentment toward anyone.

How about you Dear Reader? Can you think of someone with whom you need to mend fences? Is there someone you need to forgive or from whom you need forgiveness? You do not have to tell me about it but if you wish to, I am willing to listen. This song is not a Christmas song, but we still can benefit from the example. And to those who have wronged me, I wish you the Happiest of Christmas wishes with no hard feelings.

No Hard Feelings — Avett Brothers

When my body won’t hold me anymore And it finally lets me free Will I be ready? When my feet won’t walk another mile And my lips give their last kiss goodbye

Will my hands be steady?

When I lay down my fears My hopes and my doubts The rings on my fingers And the keys to my house

With no hard feelings

When the sun hangs low in the west And the light in my chest Won’t be kept held at bay any longer When the jealousy fades away And it’s ash and dust for cash and lust And it’s just hallelujah And love in thoughts and love in the words Love in the songs they sing in the church

And no hard feelings

Lord knows they haven’t done Much good for anyone Kept me afraid and cold

With so much to have and hold

When my body won’t hold me anymore And it finally lets me free Where will I go? Will the trade winds take me south Through Georgia grain or tropical rain

Or snow from the heavens?

Will I join with the ocean blue Or run into the Savior true And shake hands laughing And walk through the night Straight to the light Holding the love I’ve known in my life

And no hard feelings

Lord knows they haven’t done Much good for anyone Kept me afraid and cold With so much to have and hold Under the curving sky I’m finally learning why It matters for me and you To say it and mean it too For life and its loveliness And all of its ugliness Good as it’s been to me I have no enemies I have no enemies I have no enemies

I have no enemies

Wishing you joy in the journey,
